If you can call a woman’s dress as a versatile one, it will be definitely a cocktail dress that is worn on special occasions like a wedding and dinner parties.

Invariably, those special occasions fall in the evenings or early nights.  In fact that was the vogue for wearing expensive cocktail dresses but of late many cocktail dresses can now be worn elsewhere, depending on the cut and the material of the dress and the accessories worn with it.

Cocktail dress clad women are now seen even in informal gatherings. Why not; when you look beautiful in a dress and when that gives you confidence?

One important point to note when you decide to wear your cherished cocktail dress is to deck yourself with proper accessories that include glittering jewels, a feather hat and fashionable handbag.

If you happen to wear something a party gown to your office for an occasion like a farewell party, the accessory would be a blazer and comfortable shoes.  Yes, most of the current styles of cocktail dresses are no longer limited to formal outings.

What kind of women looks stunning in a cocktail dress?
We know that only a few women could claim to have truly perfect bodies, and most women who do not fall into the supermodel category prefer to hide the flaws of their figures-right? You must keep in mind that wearing a one-piece dress such as a cocktail dress can easily reveal your flaws if any. You can conclude that it is not for your personality.

Some women are bulgy above the waist and some are slender only up to the waist. Such women such find something that will balance out their figure. For the first category, they need to emphasize their cleavage or to wear something that will pull the eyes to her legs.

Cocktail dress for women with fat hip and thighs
For the plus size women, they should draw attention to the upper part of the body and to the face by hiding the thickness around hips and thighs.  A good cocktail dress for them to wear would be a dress that fits closely around the waist but without the seams pushed out by extra padding around the abdomen and has a skirt that flares out around the hips and thighs.

A cocktail dress with a full skirt would be perfect for a woman of second category because it will surely hide the bulges that she wishes not to be seen around her lower body.

Cocktail dress with an empire-style waistline
A cocktail dress with an empire-style waistline has the waist placed higher, thereby pulling the eyes towards the shoulders, the neck and the face.  It also drapes and skims over the lower body.

The only risk with wearing an empire-style cocktail dress, however, is that the empire-style cut is often used on maternity dresses, and so a woman wearing such a dress may be mistaken to be pregnant. Oh, this is an embarrassing situation.

Alternatively, a woman who has no slender waist and long legs can choose to wear a cocktail dress that is either sleeveless or strapless.  Her overall aim is to draw attention only to her upper part of the body.

As for women with top-heavy figures, they should try to show off their legs . Such women can wear a cocktail dress with a solid-colored top paired with a patterned skirt.  The hem of her dress should be so that it looks like the gown is short and that really draws the eyes to the legs.

Another way to wear the cocktail dress is to draw others attention to the big bust rather than her legs.  They can cover up their legs in a long-skirted cocktail dress but reveal a little skin on the upper body with a low V-neck or plunging neckline.

In fact, they by wearing a short cocktail gown, they can attract the attention to both the top of the body and the legs. However, bear in mind that wearing a cocktail dress with an overly busy top because it will make the upper body appear larger and skew the balance of her figure.

Apart from wearing the right type of cocktail dress, accessories like handbags, jewels and footwear help to keep the illusion of balance on a woman’s figure.

Some of the jewels that go well with a cocktail dress are long ear danglers and necklaces.

While cocktail dresses are considered as formal, I would call them as versatile dresses that can be worn on any occasion that requires some degree of formality..
